Chapter Three: Security Cards

Raven sighed as she pulled her security card out of her front pocket, getting ready to swipe it through the reader so she could go to her island when she caught sight of it. She let out a low groan, shaking her head. The design had changed since she’d last used it, which meant she now had to make 16 images with this design on them, which would be extremely hard to do with the borders.

“Yo, Pye!” Raven yelled out, hoping Pyre was close enough to hear her. Yeah, the other woman was a vampire, but the Innerworld was big and spread out, which meant even superhuman hearing could sometimes fail.

She turned to look behind her, jumping when she saw Pyre. Holy fuck, that was fast.

“Goddammit-” Raven hissed out, a hand coming up to lay over her heart, which was pounding. “I forgot how fast you could move.” Pyre’s lips twitched at the corners, as if she wanted to smile and Raven found herself wanting to smile back.

“What do you need?” Pyre asked, her voice almost kind and Raven smiled weakly before holding up her security card.

“What’s up with the new design of the security cards?” Raven asked, trying to keep her tone light. She didn’t mind the design changing, she just wished that she’d gotten a heads up.

Pyre shrugged, looking just past Raven’s shoulder.

“The cards needed an update to their code, so I also changed the graphics on them. Figured we could use a change.” Pyre said blandly, and Raven nodded. “I’d rather not have someone accessing something they don’t have permission to access.”

“It’s so intricate, though.” Raven said quietly. “Don’t get me wrong, they’re beautiful but they’re gonna be super hard to replicate in Canva.” Pyre grimaced, shifting her weight from one foot to the other.

“Sorry?” The vampire said tightly, the word clearly a question. “They needed updated, so I updated them. I don’t know what to tell you.”

After a moment of silence, Pyre sighed and spoke again.

“Do you want me to change them back, but with the updated code?”

Raven thought for a moment, twisting and turning the security card in her hads as she did, mind racing with how she could recreate it.

“Eh, I have a few ideas how I can recreate it. Pretty sure there’s some graphics online to get this out into Exparadus.” Raven said cheerily, using the constellation’s personal word for the Outerworld.

Pyre nodded, then straightened her back a bit, seemingly uncomfortable.

“Was that all?” Pyre asked briskly and Raven nodded. Pyre turned to walk away, and Raven rushed to say something.

“You’re doing a great job.”

Pyre froze for a second, then seemed to shake off her surprise, turning halfway towards Raven.

“Thank you. I try to.” Pyre said blandly, before turning and hurrying away. Raven sighed, turning back to the portal and swiping her card. She needed some rest. After all, tomorrow she was going to be busy.
